Condition, Safety and Use
  • In May 2019, the playground bridge collapsed during recess, and several sections of the slide have already been replaced. The entire structure is nearing the end of its life.
  • More varied equipment will accommodate the daily all-school recess when all 450 students are outside together.
Accessibility
  • Playground is located at the top of a hill and is not accessible from the school by wheelchair.
  • Playground substrate is not ADA compliant.
  • Playground lacks an accessible swing and other accessible equipment.
Supporting the Burr Oaks Neighborhood
  • Lincoln has been identified by the City of Madison as a public school that provides important park space to a neighborhood with residents who live below the poverty level.
  • A new, safe and accessible playground within walking distance from children’s homes would be an important recreation asset for a neighborhood that is bound by busy roadways: Fish Hatchery Road, South Park Street and the Beltline.
